LAKE BOLSENA

All of the major towns along the lake – Bolsena, Montefiascone, Marta, Capodimonte and Gradoli have beaches for swimming, some with lakeside snack bars or restaurants. Both Bolsena and Capodimonte have small ports and boat rental, kayaks and canoes are available. Organized guided boat trips around the lake and to the islands leave from both Bolsena and Capodimonte.

HIKING

The via Francigena, the pilgrims trail which links Canterbury with Rome passes through Bolsena and Montefiascone on its final descent towards the Eternal City (and then on to Jerusalem). The lesser-known Via Romea which comes down from Germany and passes through Bagnoregio before linking up with the via Franciagiana at Montefiascone, passes a short distance from the casale.

The Bosco del Sassetto in the Nature Reserve of Monte Rufeno is about 30 minutes north of the casale. The wood itself is magical, with rich vegetation and abundant wildlife, lovely for a hike. In the nearby town of Acquapendente, there is a small museum – the flower museum, which investigates the local flora, issues of biodiversity, the relationships of flowers to animals and man, and local traditions. 30 minutes to the South are the slopes of Monte Cimino with beech forests, and towards Sorano on the northwest side of the lake, there are the spectacular and haunting vie Cave – an ancient set of trails created by the Etruscans that wind through narrow canyons of tufa rock.
Although there are hiking maps of the area available, especially for the area around Orvieto, there are a number of hikes in the countryside we can suggest (we have prepared our own maps for you to take along with you).
